Grace Alexander exploded for 23 points and
Allie Wandell added 17 to account for the bulk of the offense in a 68-59 win at Hiram for the Fredonia State women's basketball team. Alexander added five assists as the Devils improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Hiram eeked its way to an 18-16 lead after a busy first quarter.The Terriers used a pair of layups to start the second quarter and push its lead to six, 24-16. The Devils then had their first big run of the game.
They went on a 27-7 burst through the end of the half and the initial 3:15 of the second half. They would gain their biggest lead to that point, 43-29, at 14 points. Wandell had 10 points and Alexander six over that span.
Late in the third, the Devils would go up 17 which would be their biggest lead of the game. Alexander nailed a three to put Fredonia State up 54-37 with 1:43 showing on the clock. Hiram scored the next six points to try to work its way back into the game.
At the halfway point of the fourth quarter the Devils led 65-49. Hiram made a final push, scoring eight in a row to heading into the final 20 seconds of the game, making it a 65-57 game with 18 seconds left, but it was too little, too late.
Mary Culeton added four assists and a team high four rebounds -- three other Devils also grabbed four boards.
Renee Park and
Sarah Seaman both added six points with a pair of threes apiece.
Hiram was led by Brooke Hickman with 22 points and nine rebounds.
The Devils will travel to Brockport this weekend for an early-season Tournament. They are slated to take on William Smith on Friday, and Keuka on Saturday.
