FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State hockey team fell 4-2 to Chatham on Saturday.
Jake Murphy and
Jake Blackwell scored the goals for the Devils.
Murphy staked Fredonia State to a 1-0 lead 14:06 into the first period.
Joe Santoro and
Justin Guelph assisted. It was Murphy's third goal of the year.
Both teams traded goals in the first minute of the second period. Chatham struck at the 18-second mark. The Devils got revenge 47 seconds into the second when Blackwell connected for his fourth goal of the season with help from
Ethan Kirbis as the Devils went up, 2-1.
The Cougars then used the power play in what was a penalty-filled game to eventually take the lead.
Six seconds before the end of the second, Matthew Doyle tied the game at 2-all with the Cougars first power play, a five on three. Then, 8:11 into the third, Caden Smith put the Cougars up 3-2 with another man-advantage goal.
All told, both teams accounted for 21 penalties in the game, including three 10-minute misconducts, and one penalty shot awarded to Chatham. Fredonia State netminder
Logan Dyck was able to turn away that free opportunity which took place 6:27 into the third.
Dyck would finish with 27 saves. Chatham's Thomson Phinney made 31 saves.
Chatham added its final goal at the 13:11 mark to give the 4-2 final when Bekk McClaine stole the puck and scored on a breakaway. Caden Smith (2 goals, 1 assist) and Nick Cyprian (3 assists) both had three points for the visitors.
The Devils return to home ice next weekend to take on North Country foes Plattsburgh on Friday, and Potsdam on Saturday. Saturday will be the annual Pink the Rink game, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.
