CHATHAM, PENN. -- Things did not look good for the Fredonia State hockey team in the opening seconds when Chatham scored just 13 ticks into the game. But a lock-down defense and six-goal outburst put away the Cougars as the Devils rebounded for a 6-1 road victory. The Devils -- winners of three of their last four -- used six different scorers, and a 34-save effort from
Dalton Jerzak for the win.
After the opening score by Chatham,
Joe Santoro and
Jake Blackwell connected with first period goals. Santoro early on at the 4:19 mark, and Blackwell late, at 18:23.
Fredonia State's
Justin Guelph scored the only goal in the second period to stake the Devils to a 3-1 lead.
The score would remain 3-1 as the Cougars were hanging around late in the third period.
With just under five minutes remaining, things changed quickly. The Devils scored three times in less than a minute to go up 6-1.
Johnny Aonso,
Anders Johnson, and
Ethan Pitzman each scored. Aonso started the scoring binge with 4:48 on the clock, and Pitzman ended it with 3:55 showing.
Pitzman had a goal and an assist, and
Jake Murphy had a pair of assists.
Â
Jerzak improved his record to 2-0 this season. After allowing the first shot to get past him, he made 34 consecutive saves. Ricardo Gonzalez made 21 saves and allowed six goals for Chatham.
The Devils will take on the same Chatham Cougars on Saturday in Steele Hall. The puck is slated for a 7 p.m. drop.
