MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's hockey team got two-point games from
Ethan Kirbis,
Jake Blackwell, and
Ryan Bailey, and timely goaltending down the stretch from
Logan Dyck in defeating the Morrisville State Mustangs, 4-3, on Tuesday. The trio of scorers each had a goal and an assist.
The two teams skated to a scoreless first period before a flurry of goals provided an exciting second period. Morrisville State got on to the board 10:12 into the second on a goal by Trevor Grasby.
The Devils would use the final seven minutes of the period to score three times, taking a 3-1 lead.
Kirbis tied the game 1-all at the 13:11 mark. It was his second goal in as many games. James Parker and Blackwell assisted.
The Devils took their first lead late in the period. On a Mustang power play,
Kurri Woodford worked the puck up to
Gregg Lee who found a wide open Bailey on a breakaway for the shorthanded goal. It was Bailey's eight of the season.
Just under a minute later, Blackwell made it 3-1 Devils with his second goal of the season.
David Sudbrink and Kirbis assisted with 54 seconds remaining in the period.
The teams traded goals early in the third period. Morrisville State's Jestin Somero scored at the 7:59 mark, and the Devils'
Johnny Malandruccolo made it a 4-2 game exactly three minutes later. His goal assisted by Bailey and
Adam Hawkins.
Morrisville State's Grasby helped the Mustangs pull within 4-3 when he deflected a shot over the should of Dyck with 7:37 left to play.
The Mustangs were hit with a cross checking penalty with 2:12 left to play. They would pull their goalie to put the skaters at even strength. Shortly after, the Devils were whistled with a penalty with 37 seconds left to give the Mustangs one last run at it.
Dyck proved his worth, making five saves over the final two minutes to preserve the win. The Devil defense also made a nice defensive stand. After a flurry in front of the net inside the final minute, the defense piled in front of the net to keep the puck from sliding in.
Dyck was credited with 32 saves and three goals against (.914 save percentage). His counterpart for Morrisville State, Garrett Boyonoski, made 25 saves, surrendering four goals for an .862 save percentage.
The Devils, winners of two of their last three, improve to 4-12 overall and 3-7 in the SUNYAC. The Mustangs fall to 6-12 and 3-8 in the conference.
The Devils head to Chatham on Friday for a 3 p.m game, then play Chatham at home in Steele Hall on Saturday. The puck drops at 7 p.m.Â
