Devils bats power Opening Day win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Opening Day for the Fredonia State baseball team and debut for new head coach Jordan Basile resulted in a 13-6 win over Neumann College on Friday in Myrtle Beach. The Devils pounded out 14 hits en route the win.

Tyler Phillips and Anthony Kinney led the attack with three hits apiece. Ethan Blaisdell and Pat Bigham both collected a pair of safeties. Brian Chatt connected for a homerun and reached base three times.

The Devils threatened in the first, loading the bases. The rally was quashed with an inning-ending, 5-3 double play.

The Devils kept the pressure on in the second and exploded for seven runs. The highlight of the inning was a two-run homer by Chatt. In the inning, Kinney, Phillips, and Tylor Murphy each doubled.

Blaisdell plated the first run with an RBI single. Next up, Kinney's double scored Bigham. After a ground out, Phillips followed that up with a two-run double. Chatt's homerun capped the scoring for the inning, putting the Devils up 7-0.

The Devils tacked on a run in the fourth when Blaisdell stole home.

Neumann got three runs back in one swing when Zach Ray hit a three run homer in the fourth, making it an 8-3 game. Starter Nate O'Brochta responded by striking out the next two batters.

Fredonia State added one more in the fifth when Bigham scored on a wild pitch.

Neumann tacked on two in the seventh. The runs were set up by a walk and a hit batter and cut the lead to 9-4.

The Devils bounced back by getting four in the bottom of the inning. Luke Kenyon hit a sacrifice fly and Phillips and singled in another run. Two more runs scored on wild pitches.

O'Brochta – on a pitch count – was credited with the win for the Devils. He went four innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out three. Kenny Ynoa came on for 2 2/3 innings of middle relief, giving up one run. Bigham finished the final 2 1/3 innings allowing a pair of runs.
