CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia State softball won its first game of the season Sunday, a 13-10 slugfest over Utica in the first of two games at The Spring Games at Clermont's Hancock Park. The Blue Devils (1-6) proceeded to drop the nightcap to Framingham State, 10-2.
In the opener,
Maria Caviris led a 19-hit attack with a double and three singles and picked up the save with a three-pitch relief appearance in the first extra inning.
Nicole Kumro had a pair of doubles and three RBI while
Allie Wandell had a double, two singles, and three runs scored.
Emily Chelius picked up the pitching win in relief following a solid starting performance by
Vanessa Galbraith, whose bid for the win ended when Utica scored five runs in the last of the seventh to force extra innings.
Caviris had an RBI single and Chelius a two-run single as part of Fredonia State's decisive four-run eighth inning, which began with a runner placed on second bases according to the tiebreaking procedure.
In Sunday's second game, the Blue Devils were limited to four hits against Framingham, including one double each by Wandell and
Hannah Mezzoprete. Chelius started in the circle followed by
Erin Cunningham, Galbraith (who was tagged with the loss), and Caviris. Framingham broke open a 3-2 game with seven runs in the seventh.
The Blue Devils are back in action Monday with games vs. national powers Eastern Connecticut State and Millikin at Legends Way.
