Pitching and power lead Devils to win

DAVENPORT, FLA. -- The Fredonia State baseball team improved to 6-1 with a 7-2 victory over Lancaster Bible College on Saturday. Derrick Walters earned the victory with five innings of one-hit relief, and Ethan Blaisdell and Tyler Phillips connected for homeruns. Jake Wentland and Patrick Bigham both connected for doubles.

The Devils struck first in the second inning. After Ryan Hann reached based on a one-out error, Blaisdell took Lancaster's starting pitcher to the bridge with his first homer of the season.

The Devils stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third when Bigham's bases-loaded, double-play grounder resulted in a run.

A walk and a double to lead off the bottom of the third put Lancaster on the board. A  run-scoring ground out brought home their second run, making it a 3-2 game.

Starting pitcher Nate Lockwood allowed a leadoff walk to start the fourth inning. He would strike out the next three before exiting the game. Lockwood would go four innings, striking out six and allowing two runs on two hits and three walks.

Walters would start the fifth and finish the game to earn the win.

The Devils added a run in the top of the fifth on a solo shot by Phillips, his second homerun of the season.

In the sixth, Wentland doubled and would score on a fielder's choice to give the Devils a 5-2 lead. In the eighth, a sacrifice fly by Wentland added an insurance run. The Devils' final run came on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Genau in the top of the ninth.

Phillips led the Devil offense with a pair of hits.

Fredonia State is off Sunday, then face Greenville College for a Monday doubleheader.
