Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Furious first not enough for Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State Women's Basketball Team hosted SUNYAC opponent, New Paltz in a Monday matchup. The Blue Devils started off the game hot, but were unable to maintain the momentum for the entire game, leading to a final score of 58-43. The Devils were led by Mary Culeton  with 8 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and 4 steals. Lauren Mickley added 10 points and 8 rebounds, and Isabella Wier had 10 Points and 3 steals.

Fredonia State came out of the gates with a furious start, shooting 44% from the field and 60% from three in the first quarter. With 3:09 left in the first quarter Renee Park hit a deep three to give Fredonia State its first lead of the game at 12-10. The Blue Devils held onto this lead for the remainder of the quarter, closing out the quarter with a 19-13 lead. Mickley, Mackenna Nechwedowich, and Park all hit from three point range to give the Blue Devils the lead.

New Paltz came out in the second quarter with a new found energy, holding the Devils to 25% shooting from the field and closing down all outlets at three point range. Even with the Hawks outstanding defense and full court press, Fredonia State was able to hold onto their lead until the last shot of the second quarter. The Hawk's Brianna Fitzgerald's layup gave a the Hawks 29-27lead heading into the half.

In the third quarter, New Paltz ran out to 48-34 lead. During the run, the Hawks were able to hold Fredonia State to seven points and give them their lowest shooting percentage quarter of the game, at 21%. The Blue Devils were able to regain their range from three, after Culeton kissed the backboard with a top of the arc three pointer.

The three pointers continued to fall for the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter, as they went 2-4 from deep. However, the Hawks were able to match each score and maintain their lead up until the end of the game. New Paltz systematically ran a full court press for a majority of the game. This style of play wreaked havoc for the Blue Devils transitions, where they turned the ball over 29 times.

New Paltz improves to 14-6 and 10-4 in the conference.

Fredonia State (10-11 overall, 5-9 SUNYAC) looks to bounce back against another SUNYAC opponent, Buffalo State this upcoming Saturday.
