FREDONIA, N.Y. -- On Monday, Student Athlete Advisory Committee President
Lauren Mickley helped organize the biggest blood drive in Chautauqua County in recent memory. On Tuesday in a must-win for the women's basketball team, she achieved a triple-double which included career-highs with 14 rebounds and 10 assists, while adding 20 points - -two shy of her career high -- in her final home game as a Blue Devil, leading the Devils to a 67-56 victory over Brockport.
Brockport jumped out to a 14-4 lead and looked to be in command. The Blue Devils buckled up and scored the last six points of the first quarter, and trailed 12-10 after one.
A layup by
Mackenna Nechwedowich to open the second tied the game at 12-all. The Devils first lead came following a layup by
Renee Park to make it a 16-15 game at the 7:51 mark.
Up 23-22, the Devils then went on a an 7-0 run sandwiched by a pair of layups by Mickley, giving Fredonia State a 30-22 lead at the half. Mickley led all scorers with 10 points, andÂ
Morgan Davis had eight points. The Devils outscored Brockport, 20-10, in the second quarter.
In the third, the Devils extended the lead to 13 points on another 7-0 run. Layups by Mickley and Park, and a three by Nechwedowich made it 37-24, Blue Devils.
A long three by Brockport's Anna Felice cut Fredonia State's lead to 45-38 heading into the final quarter.
Brockport's 8-4 run to open the fourth cut the Devils' lead to three, 49-46, with 6:00 on the clock.
The Devils got the lead back into double digits on another 7-0 run capped by back-to-back jumpers by Nechwedowich, making it a 61-50 game. Brockport never really threatened after that.
Nechwedowich finished with 16 points and five rebounds, and
Morgan Davis had 12 points.
Mary Culeton had eight rebounds and six assists, and Park added eight points.
The win allowed the Devils to leapfrog Brockport in the SUNYAC standings. The Devils are now 6-10 in the conference, while Brockport falls to 5-11. The two teams split this year's games.
The Devils, currently in seventh place, take on Geneseo and Oswego to wrap up the regular season this weekend. The top six teams make the post season. The Devils defeated both teams earlier this year, both games taking place in Dods Hall.
