Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Devils battle comes up short

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team fell to Oneonta, 60-51, on Saturday. Alena Wright put up 10 points on 5-6 shooting from the floor and grabbed a team-high five rebounds and had four blocked shots.

Sarah Seaman added 11 points, and Laurell Brown and Amber Louis had eight apiece. Mary Culeton dished out six assists.

The Devils jumped out to a 15-11 lead with Seaman connecting on a trio of threes in the early going. Oneonta battled back, making the final three field goals of the first quarter to take a 17-15 lead.

A layup by Brown to start the second tied the game at 17-all. Oneonta then went on a 15-0 run before a hook shot by Wright and a three by Renee Park cut the Red Dragon momentum. Oneonta would be up 11 by the half, 33-22.

The Red Dragons kept the pace up to start the third, rolling out a 13-2 run. Fredonia State bounced back, scoring eight of the next nine points. Oneonta eventually led 49-33 heading into the final frame.

The Devils would cut the lead to nine twice in the fourth, but would not get any closer than that. Wright hit on layup, cutting the lead to 58-49 with just under 2:00 to play. A basket by Seaman with 21 seconds left gave the final score.

The Dragons outrebounded the Devils, 39-30. The edge in threes went to the Devils, who connected on seven compared to four by Oneonta.

Oneonta improves to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC.

The Devils (3-8/0-6 SUNYAC) are off for the winter break and will return to the hardwood on January 6th when they travel to Cortland.
