Golden Eagles slip past Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team had one last chance to score, but could not convert any of its final three shots in the closing seconds, dropping a 70-68 game to Brockport on Tuesday. The Devils led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter before the Golden Eagles used a flurry of threes down the stretch to overtake the Devils. Brockport made 6-8 threes in the fourth.

Renee Park tied her career high with 23 points and also grabbed nine rebounds to pace Fredonia State. Laurell Brown added 12 points and six boards.

The Devils started off hot from long range in the early going. Five different players would connect on at least one three pointer. Brown and Park would finish with 10 points each at the half, staking the Devils to a 39-30 lead.

Caitlyn Snyder hit a layup to start the second half to give the Devils an 11-point lead.

Brockport then rallied for a 10-0 run to pull within a point, trailing 41-40. A basket and a pair of free throws by Park, and a three pointer by Sarah Seaman stopped the momentum, putting the Devils up 48-40. The Devils would take a 48-42 lead into the final quarter.

Brockport led off with a basket in the fourth, but the Devils would respond with back-to-back threes by Park and Seaman, a layup from Snyder, and another three from Park to take their biggest lead of the game of 15 points, 59-44, with 7:22 on the clock.

With the Devils up 66-54 following a Park three at the 5:57 mark, Brockport scored nine straight points, courtesy of three three-pointers, to cut the lead to three, 66-63. After a pair of free throws by Brown, Brockport hit another pair of threes to take its first lead, proving to be the game winner.

For the Devils, Seaman added 11 points and Snyder had 10 points and eight rebounds. Mary Culeton led the Fredonia State with seven assists and five steals.

The Devils held the edge in three pointers, 11-8, and Brockport held a slim 40-39 edge in rebounds.

Brockport received 20 points from Anna Felice, one of four Eagles in double digits. Zairea Hanna had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. They improve to 4-3 and 3-1 in the SUNYAC.

The Devils drop to 3-6 and 0-4 in the conference. The team is back home on Friday and Saturday to wrap up the semester. They take on New Paltz at 5:30 on Friday, and Oneonta at 2:00 on Saturday.
