FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's volleyball team fell to Cortland, 3-1 on Saturday. Cortland won the first two sets, then the Devils mounted a furious comeback to take the third set, but could not keep the momentum as they sustained their first SUNYAC loss, falling to 2-1. Cortland improved to 3-0.
The offense was led by
Emily Jones with 11 kills.
Brinn Shaughnessy had a pair of aces and a team-high 15 digs.
Kourtney Krchniak directed the offense with 20 assists.
The Devils hung with Cortland in the first set. The teams were tied at 15-all midway through. Courtland would eventually win, 25-22.
The second set was all Cortland, 25-11.
The third set did not start well for the Blue Devils. They quickly found themselves down 5-1, then later, 18-10. The Devils ran off four straight points before Cortland scored again to make it a 19-14 score. Shaughnessy then stepped to the service line and Fredonia State would score the next eight points to take a 22-20 lead. Shaughenessy would have a pair of aces during that run.
Jones delivered the set winner, with the Devils taking it, 25-23.
With Fredonia State up 7-5 in the fourth set, Cortland went on a 9-1 run to take control of the set, eventually winning 25-10. They improved to 11-2 overall.
The Devils (6-8 overall) travel to Plattsburgh and Potsdam next weekend.
