PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Fredonia State Women's Volleyball team improved to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play with a straight-set victory over host, Plattsburgh State (7-8, 1-3 SUNYAC). The Blue Devils closed out three close sets, 28-26, 25-19, and 25-20.
The visitors found themselves down 21-13 in the first set. Working to erase the deficit, they went on a 12-4 run to even things at 25.
Emily Jones (Plainfield, Ill.) and
Sierra Keim (Shinglehouse, Pa.) recorded the next two points on a kill and service ace, respectively.
Fredonia State allowed one more point, before Jones and
Selena Brown (Queens, N.Y.) hit back-to-back kills to end the set.
Coach
Geoff Braun credited his team, stating "We showed an incredible amount of poise to start so flat and comeback in that first set".
The second and third sets saw the Blue Devils finding their rhythm. Braun noted, "after the first set we settled in and started to execute our game plan".
Jones led her squad in kills, 13.
Christie Ackendorf (Amherst, N.Y.) was the most efficient hitter on the court, recording a .375 hitting percentage. Keim tallied a team-high 14 digs and
Erin Callahan (Clarence Center, N.Y.) led the team in blocks with four.
As a team, Fredonia recorded 38 kills and 34 assists, along with a hitting a percentage of .184. Defensively the Blue Devils tallied 60 digs and seven blocks.
Fredonia State returns to action tomorrow, October 2
nd, when they travel to Potsdam for a 1:00 PM match.
