FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's soccer team suffered its first loss this season, dropping a 1-0 game to St. John Fisher. A goal by Fisher's Karli Kovarik in the 23rd minute was all the offense the Cardinals would need in Saturday's game at University Stadium.
The Devils best chance to tie the game in the second half came fromÂ
Kayleigh Daniels. At the 66-minute mark, the Fisher goalie Halle Tickell chipped a ball away from the top of the goal box, and it was collected by Daniels who had a wide open net from about 40 yards out with Tickell out of position. Her arching shot went just wide of the mark.
Katie Sellers missed on a breakaway from about the penalty kick marker at the 80-minute mark. Her attempt sailed high as a pair of defenders closed in on her. The Devils kept the bulk of the action in the Fisher end of the field in the second half, but could not find the net.
Sabrina Suriani had five saves for the Devils. Tickell made six saves for the visitors. The Devils held a 14-12 advantage on shots, and shots on goal were even at six apiece.
Fisher improves to 4-1.
Fredonia State (5-1-1) travels to Allegheny College on Tuesday.
