BUFFALO, N.Y. -- After Fredonia State's first four games where defense ruled -- all were decided by 1-0 finals -- the men's soccer team came back from a 3-0 halftime deficit to win 4-3 at Medaille. "That was one of the more amazing games I have ever been a part of," said head coach
P.J. Gondek. "We just had to remind ourselves at halftime what we are about. We proved it, now we can't forget it."
The game winner came off the foot of
Kevin Loftus in the 68th minute.
Kaleb Steward had two goals fot the winners, and
Matt Cullen added a goal and an assist.
Ander Castillo scored for Medialle in the 15th and 36th minutes, sandwiching a goal by Rodrigo Fernandez in the 31st minute. Castillo would finish with eight shots, including four on goal.
The hosts outshot the Devils, 14-5, in the opening frame, as well as a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Things changed in the second half, when Fredonia State held advantages of 11-5, and 8-2 in shots on goal. For the game, both teams had 12 shots on goal. Fredonia State had a 4-3 edge on corner kicks.
Steward's first goal came 1:42 into the second half. He struck again 10 minutes later with an assist from
Matt Cullen. A minute-and-a-half later at the 58:33 mark, Cullen scored to tie the game.
William Richardson and
Kyle Pezzulo shared duties in goal. Richardson gave up one goal in 23 minutes with three saves, and Pezzulo two goals in 67 minutes stopping six shots on goal.
David Mighten made seven saves for the Mavericks, and allowed all four goals.
The Devils improve to 3-2, and Medaille evens its record at 2-2
The Devils travel to Allegheny College on Saturday.
