FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A scoring drought spanning the two halves proved the undoing of the Fredonia State Blue Devils in their 12-9 women's lacrosse loss Wednesday to the D'Youville Saints at University Stadium.
The Blue Devils (0-4) jumped to a 5-1 lead with 10:11 left in the first half. They did not score again until 12:26 remained in the game to end a 9-0 run by the Saints (2-4). Fredonia State managed to cut its five-goal deficit to two goals in the late going, but could no closer.
Erin Woods had four goals and one assist to lead the Fredonia State scoring.
Emily Carr, the Blue Devil goalkeeper, made 10 saves and collected a team-high four ground balls.
For the Saints, Riley Riedel filled the stat sheet with five goals, three ground balls, eight draw controls, and four caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Hannah Wilson made 11 saves.
The Blue Devils built their early lead on two goals by Woods and one each by
Sydney Buchko,
Allison Coon, and
Madeline Haney sandwiched around a goall by Riedel for D'Youville. Riedel had three goals and Isabella Lucania and Marissa Markott two goals each during the Saints' decisive 9-0 run.
