Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Numbers add up in favor of Blue Devils

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia State women's tennis won three matches and was credited with three walkovers for a 6-3 SUNYAC win Saturday over Brockport. The Blue Devils improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Jane Chiacchia at No. 1 and Bella Surma at No. 3 won their respective singles matches. Chiacchia swept Heather Phillips 6-4, 6-3 while Surma prevailed over Andrea Banke 6-4, 2-6 and 10-5 in the third-set tiebreaker. Dominique Martello at No. 5 and Sarah O'Leary at No. 6 earned team points because Brockport did not have players to contest them.

In No. 1 doubles play, Chiacchia and Taylor Marelli combined for an 8-6 win over Phillips and Sarah Mahar. The Blue Devils also earned a point at No. 3 doubles -- Surma and O'Leary -- in another walkover. It was the first match of the season for the Golden Eagles.

Also competing Saturday for Fredonia State were Princess Unita Obi at No. 3 singles and at No. 2 doubles with Martello as her playing partner. Next up for Fredonia State is a trip Monday to face SUNYAC West foe Oswego State.
