FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State bats exploded for 19 hits in a 13-4 victory over visiting Penn State Behrend on Tuesday. The win gives the Devils possesion of the I-90 Cup, the traveling trophy awarded to the two schools located just off the Interstate.
Tyler Phillips,
Johnny Genau,
Ryan Hann, and
Brian Chatt each had three hits in the game. Genau blasted a two-run homer in the first inning, and would later add a double. Phillips had a two-run blast of his own in the eighth inning.Â
Trailing 4-2 in the fifth inning, freshman
Ryan Davis beat out an infield error as Genau scored to make it a 4-3 game. A Davis single in the seventh scored Genau to tie the game.Â
The Devils would tack on three more runs following a double by Hann and a triple by
Matt Heffernan. Heffernan finished the day with two hits and a team-high three RBI.
Luke Kenyon and Davis both had a pair of hits for the Devils.
The Devils plated sixth in the ninth to put the game away.
Fredonia State used nine pitchers -- each throwing one inning -- for the game. The win went to Brocton High School grad
Ronald Brown who threw a scoreless seventh. Caleb Caldwell, a Frewsburg grad, took the loss. He went six innings, surrendering three earned runs.
Devil pitchers finished the day with 10 strikeouts.
Fredonia State is back at home on Saturday with a twinbill against Brockport.
