FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Solid performances up and down the Fredonia State lineup resulted in a 8-1 season-opening women's tennis win Saturday over D'Youville.
Five Blue Devils won both their singles and doubles matches, led by junior
Jane Chiacchia at the No. 1 spots. She was a 6-4, 6-3 singles winner and teamed with senior
Taylor Marelli for a 6-0 doubles victory. Marelli also posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
Other singles' success came from freshman
Princess Unita Obi at the No. 3 spot, freshman
Bella Surma at No. 4, and junior
Dominique Martello at No. 5. Obi and Surma also won their No. 2 doubles match. Martello and sophomore
Sarah O'Leary combined to win at No. 3 doubles.
Three of the singles matches went to tiebreakers with Obi prevailing 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), and 10-6 over D'Youville's Faith Falkowski, and Martello edging Taylor-Anne Austin 5-7, 6-4, and 10-8. O'Leary lost her singles match to Katrina Whipple by a 2-6, 6-1, 8-10 score.
It was the first collegiate coaching win for interim head coach
Dave Kinkela, who will have a chance to add to his ledger when the Blue Devils entertain Daemen on Saturday. The match has been moved up to a noon start on the Steele Hall courts.
