Solid pitching results in SUNYAC softball split

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State bounced back from a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in 10 innings in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Geneseo with a 3-1 win Game 2. Solid pitching highlighted both games for the Blue Devils (2-4 overall, 2-2 SUNYAC).

In Game 2, Emily Chelius and Katie Yudin combined for a six-hitter with Chelius going the first 4 1/3 innings to earn her first collegiate win and Yudin nailing down the save with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Yudin also went 3 of 3 at the plate and scored what proved to be the eventual game-winning run as part of a two-run fourth inning. She raised her batting average to .571 (8 for 14).

In Game 1, Maria Caviris was heavily involved offensively, as well as in the circle. She had three hits and one RBI yet was tagged with the loss in relief when she uncorked a wild pitch to allow the winning run to score in the last of the 10th. The run was unearned as a result of the International tiebreaker, which takes effect in the 10th inning in SUNYAC softball games.

Yudin scattered six hits and fanned four over the first seven innings. She held the Knights (5-2 overall, 3-1 SUNYAC) scoreless until they plated two runs in the last of the seventh to force extra innings. Offensively, Syd Merkley had two hits in Game 1 while Caviris added an RBI with a sacrifice fly in Game 2. Eva FitzSimmons also had an RBI in the nightcap.

The Blue Devils are back in action Tuesday when they host the University of Rochester in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
