FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team dropped a hotly contested game, 51-50, to Nazareth on Wednesday. The Golden Flyers converted a layup with 14 seconds remaining for what would prove to be the winning basket. Neither team led by more than nine points the entire game.
For Fredonia State,
Mary Culeton (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) had her second straight -- and third overall -- double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Renee Park (Union Springs, N.Y. / Union Springs) added 13 points.
Lauren Mickley (Dansville, Ohio / Dansville) and
Mackenna Nechwedowich (Berkshire, N.Y. / Newark Valley) added eight apiece.
Points were hard to come by in the first quarter. Fredonia State jumped out to an 8-3 lead, with Nechwedowich scoring half of their points.
Naz would inch back into it and find themselves up one, 11-10, at the end of the first. From the end of the first until the 6:05 mark on the second -- a span of five-and-a-half minutes -- the Devils went on a scoring drought before Mickely's basket in the paint cut Nazareth's lead to 16-12.Â
The Flyers biggest lead of the half, 23-16, came after a three pointer by Naz's Caley Cornwell with 37 seconds on the clock. Culeton cut through the lane for a layup to make it a 23-18 lead in Naz's favor at the halfway point. Culeton led all players with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Devils got a layup from Mickley and a three from Park to quickly tie the game at 23-all to start the second half. The offense picked up in the third, with the two teams combining for five threes over the first five minutes. Park nailed three for Fredonia State, her last at the 6:07 mark to cut the lead to 33-29.
Later in the third, the Devils would tie the game on a 7-0 run.
Jaden Sciotti nailed a three,
Morgan Davis put in a second-effort basket, and Culeton knifed through the lane to tie the game at 40-all.
Nechwedowich ended the quarter with a put back to give the Devils their first lead since midway through the first, 42-40. Jadyn Abrams powered Naz with 10 points in the quarter.Â
After two ties and a lead change, Naz nursed a 49-48 lead. Davis converted a layup in the paint to put the Devils up one with just under three minutes to go. Neither team would score until Naz's Sabrina Wolf got the bounce and the roll on a contested layup with 14 seconds remaining. The Devils' last-ditch effort did not result in a score as the visitors held on for a one-point win.
Abrams finished with 23 points and Wolfe had 10 for Naz. Fredonia State controlled the boards, outrebounding the Flyers 50-36.Â
Naz improves to 4-4.
The Devils (6-4) wrap up the semester on Saturday when the play host to Oswego.
