Devils sink Lakers, 59-48

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team claimed a SUNYAC win over visiting Oswego on Saturday, 59-48. The Devils were led by Renee Park (Union Springs, N.Y. / Union Springs) with 22 points and five assists, and Mackenna Nechwedowich (Berkshire, N.Y. / Newark Valley) had 16 points. Lauren Mickley (Danville, Ohio / Danville) added 12 and a team high eight rebounds.

The Lakers started off with the hot hand, jumping out to a 9-2 lead, forcing the Devils into a timeout. The Devils responded by scoring the next 10 points. The rally was ended by back-to-back and-ones by Nechwedowich to put the Devils up, 12-9. She would connect on another three-point-play to end the first quarter, tying the game at 17.

They Devils took control in the second quarter, outscoring Oswego, 21-10. Park and Nechwedoch did the damage offensively for the half combining for 27 points -- Park with 14 and Nechwedowich with 13. The duo was 10-16 from the field, which included three three-pointers from Park.

The third quarter saw the Lakers make a run, opening with a 12-3 spurt to pull withing two, 41-39. They would later make it a one-point game, 44-43, at the end of three.

Fredonia State opened the fourth on a 9-0 run before a layup by Oswego's Danielle Caivana sliced in for a layup. The Devils led 53-45 and would hold on for the win.

The Lakers fall to 0-4 in the conference and 3-7 overall. Shania Iglesias had 17 points, and Diamond Picket and Caivana each had 12.

For Fredonia State, Mary Culeton dished five assists and had six rebounds. 

The Devils (7-4 / 2-2) take a break until January 7th, when they play host to Plattsburgh.
