BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team dropped its SUNYAC opener, 54-46, at Brockport on Tuesday. Freshman
Mary Culeton (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) registered a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) added 13 points and
Renee Park (Union Springs, N.Y. / Union Springs) had 10 points, three assists, and two steals. The Devils fell to 5-2, and 0-1 in the conference.
Brockport improved to 6-1 and 1-0. They were led by Chelsea Henry with 15 points and eight rebounds. Erin Radack added 13 points, and Erin Nolan had 12 rebounds.
The first quarter was about as evenly played as could be. There were three lead changes and three ties, with neither team leading by more than four points. Brockport was up 16-14 at the end of the period. Fredonia State's biggest lead was at 12-8 following a three by Culeton. Brockport closed the frame on an 8-2 run.
Brockport would outscore the Devils 13-10 in the second quarter, taking a 29-24 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter saw offensive struggles on both sides with each team scoring seven points. With Brockport up 35-28 with 6:55 left to play in the quarter, both teams had a four-and-a-half-minute scoring drought.
Morgan Davis (Allegany, N.Y. / Allegany-Limestone) muscled in for a layup to bring the Devils within three points. Brockport headed into the final frame up five, 36-31.
Park opened the scoring in the fourth connecting on a pair of free throws, as the Devils were within three points, 36-33.
Brockport then made the only real run of the game, outscoring Fredonia State 11-2 to take its biggest lead to that point following a three pointer by Radack. They would stretch the lead to 14 when Radack made a layup at the 4:24 mark.
Brockport maintained a double-digit lead until Park capped the scoring with a three pointer to end the game.
The Devils held a 46-43 lead in rebounding. The Devils shot just 28 percent from the floor, while the Golden Eagles connected on 33 percent of their shots.
Fredonia State heads home to Dods Hall this weekend. They take on Geneseo on Friday, and Cortland on Saturday.
