R.I.T. bests Devils, 77-71

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team dropped a 77-71 game at R.I.T. on Sunday in the Consolation game of the Brodie Tournament. Marquis Tubman (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Erasmus Hall) led the Devils with 15 points and Dydy Bryan (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Boys & Girls) and My'Kell Kaigler (Liverpool, N.Y. / Bishop Ludden) had 12 apiece. Bryan added a team high eight rebounds and three assists.

Kaigler got the scoring going with a three pointer and a layup giving the Devils a 5-0 lead to open the game. R.I.T. tied the game at 7-all.

From that point until R.I.T took a 33-32 lead, there would be nine lead changes and four more ties. With 4:39 left in the half, Kevin Ryan made a free throw to tie the game, then one that would give R.I.T. the lead for good.

To end the first, the Tigers would outscore Fredonia State 11-6 to give them a 43-38 lead at the break.

The game stayed close in the second half. A three by Tubman brought the Devils to within a point, 48-47

The Tigers would answer by going on an 11-2 run to take its biggest lead to that point, 59-49.

The  Devils kept the game close, pulling within a two points at the 2:36 mark. Bryan hit a pair of free throws cutting the lead to 69-67.

The Devils could not mount a significant rally to overcome the hosts.

R.I.T. shot 41 percent from the floor to the Devils 40 percent. They hit eight threes to the Devils seven, and won the battle on the boards, 41-36.

Jackson Brown (Latham, N.Y. / Catholic Central) was named to the All Tournament Team. He finished the day with nine points  On Saturday, he poured in a career-best 21 points.

The Devils begin conference play on Tuesday with a road game at Brockport.
