BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Canisius scored the first 12 points of the game, and took down the Fredonia State men's basketball team, 106-40, in a contest that was broadcast on
ESPN3. The Devils took on the Division I scholarship program to prepare for a tough SUNYAC schedule that begins Nov. 30.
The Devils were led by
Jackson Brown (Latham, N.Y. / Catholic Central) with 10 points and
Dydy Bryan (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Boys & Girls) who had four points and a team-high five rebounds.
After the 12-0 to start the game,
Kreem George (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Brooklyn Collegiate) got the Devils on the board with a layup. The Griffins would push its lead to 19-2 before the Devils began to settle in. Brown and
Jacob Hougan (Chardon, Oh. / Chardon) hit back-to-back baskets to make it 19-6.
Canisius would lead by as many as 37 points in the first half, going up 50-13 late in the frame. The half ended with a 53-20 score.
The Griff's Akrum Ahemed led all scorers with 16 points at the break. Malek Green added 12 points. Brown and
Marquis Tubman (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Erasmus Hall) led the Devils with four points apiece as seven different Devils got into the scoring column.
Canisius kept up the pace in the second half with a 10-2 run to open. They would outscore the Devils by identical 53-20 counts for both halves.
Canisius was 16-43 from three point range, with the Devils going 4-23. The Griffs won the battle on the boards 49-33. Fredonia State was a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.
The game was the home opener for the hosts, as they improved to 1-4. The Devils dropped to 0-4.
Canisius and Fredonia State have played nine times previously, and the Griffs have won all nine of those games. The last time these two schools met was Dec. 4, 1942 - a 48-28 victory for Canisius.
The Devils play in the RIT Tournament on Saturday and Sunday before opening conference play at Brockport on Tuesday.
