SUNY Poly tops Devils, 82-69

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team dropped an 82-69 contest to SUNY Poly in the opening round of the Harold J.Brodie Tournament hosted by R.I.T. on Saturday. Freshman Jackson Brown (Latham, N.Y. / Catholic Central) scored a career-high 21 points, and Jacob Hougan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon) added 13 for the Devils.  Dydy Bryan (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Boys & Girls) added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Josh Gregory scored half of the Wildcat's points, finishing with 41 as SUNY Poly improved to 3-2. 

The Devils put together a strong first period, leading by as many as 18 points. With 4:03 to play in the half, a free throw by Bryan put the Devils up 38-20. A layup by Hougan again put the Devils up 18 with just under two minutes left to play, 40-22.

The Devils led 41-28 at the break, but were outscored 54-28 in the second half.

Down twelve, 47-35, the Wildcat's made a 10-0 run to cut the lead to two points, 47-45.

Poly eventually tied the score at 54-all after a pair of free throws by Gregory with 10:54 showing on the clock. On the next possession, Gregory nailed a three pointer to give Poly its first lead since early in the first half.

With the Devils down five, 70-65, and three minutes remaining, the Wildcats went on a 12-4 run to close out the game.

The Devils shot 40 percent from the floor, and hit on 6-of-25 three pointers (24 percent). Poly was a little sharper, hitting 48 percent of its shots, and was 5-of-15 from three-point range.

The Devils outrebounded Poly, 44-36.

The Devils (0-5) take on R.I.T.  who lost to Pitt-Bradford, 105-101, in overtime in the second game of the day. Gametime is slated for 1 p.m.
