Scoring frenzy lifts Devils over Bears

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia State Men's Hockey Team improved to 2-0-0 in conference play and 4-2-0 overall after a Friday night matchup with Potsdam (0-5-0, 0-5-0 SUNYAC). The Blue Devils got goals from four different players to upend the visitors 6-1.

Fredonia State scored its first goal seven minutes into the game. Jake Blackwell (Hamden, Conn.) made an up-and-under move to get in front of net. The sophomore's shot was saved by Potsdam's netminder, creating a rebound.

David Sudbrink (Nolensville, Tenn.) collected the puck and put the Blue Devils up 1-0.

Just over 10 minutes later, Fredonia State struck again on a similar play. This time Ryan Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) collected the loose puck after flying in from the left side of the net. The freshman's one-timer gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage going into intermission.

The second period was much quieter until action picked up in the closing minutes. Logan Dyck (Calgery, Alberta) preserved the Blue Devils lead with three minutes to play after a Potsdam player got loose right in front of his net.

Dyck was up to the challenge, making a glove save on the wrister.

At 18:02, Fredonia State earned a power play off a Potsdam penalty for cross-checking. The Blue Devils' power play unit made quick work of the man-up advantage.

29 seconds in, Bryce Witman (Reading, Pa.) found Bailey for his second of the night. Bailey came from behind net and finished the one-timer to give Fredonia State a 3-0 lead right before the second intermission.

Potsdam got in the mix after earning a power play seven minutes into the 3rd period. After Dyck went to the ice to make a save, the Bears were able to take advantage of goalie being out of net. The goal cut Fredonia's lead to 3-1.

Fredonia State didn't let Potsdam gain any momentum. Just under 40 seconds later, the Devils took advantage of a 5-3 power play. Gregg Lee (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) found a waiting Witman, who converted on the slapshot to make it 4-1.

The Blue Devils stayed hot, striking again one minute and 40 seconds later. Kurri Woodford (Littleton, Colo.) took advantage of the line change from Potsdam and put home the wrister. The sophomore's goal gave Fredonia State a 5-1 lead.

The home team's final goal of the night came with 57 seconds to play in the game. Lee was streaking down the right wing when he found Sudbrink waiting in front of the net.

Bailey and Sudbrink finished with two goals apiece.

Witman and Lee both finished with two points, while Woodford, Matt Letmanski (Wheaton, Ill.), Craig McCabe (Webster, N.Y.), Johnny Malandruccolo (Auburn, N.Y.), and Blackwell all finished with one point each.

Dyck earned another win in net after collecting 32 saves over 60 minutes of play.

Fredonia State returns to action tomorrow against Plattsburgh. The game will take place at home at 7 PM.
