FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia State Men's Hockey Team (4-3-1, 2-1-0 SUNYAC) dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting Plattsburgh State (4-3-1, 3-2-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday night. The Cardinals used a strong third period to top the home team.
The first period was quiet until the two sides exchanged quick goals.
Plattsburgh's came with 4:37 to play in the first from a power play situation. Fredonia State answered right back, scoring the equalizer with 3:46 to play.
Johnny Malandruccolo (Auburn, N.Y.) took advantage of a rebound off the Plattsburgh goalie. The situation was created by
Kurri Woodford (Littleton, Colo.) who took the initial shot.
The second period was similar to the first, with Plattsburgh scoring the go-ahead goal at the 13:55 mark. This time it took five minutes for the Blue Devils to answer back.
In a man-up situation, Woodford ripped a perfect shot from the top of the circle. The sophomore's goal went just over the goalie's glove into the top, left corner of the net. The goal tied things up at 2-2, which is how the teams stayed going into the second intermission.
The third period was all Plattsburgh, who scored three unanswered to close out the game.
Four of the visitors' five goals came from their power play unit.
Malandruccolo finished with one point on his goal and Woodford finished with two points on a goal and assist.
Logan Dyck (Calgary, Alberta) recorded 40 saves over 60 minutes of play.
Fredonia State will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Nazareth for a non-conference matchup.
