FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team dropped a 65-53 contest to visiting Penn State Behrend College on Wednesday.
Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) led the Devils with 13 points, and
Lauren Mickley (Danville, Ohio / Danville) added 12.
Renee Park (Union Springs, N.Y. / Union Springs) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Mary Culeton (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) added seven assists and seven points.
Behrend was led by Kara Haslett with 12 points -- one of five scorers in double digits for the Lions.
The first quarter saw the Devils work their way to a 14-13 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, tied at 18-all, the Lions went on an 14-2 run to take a 32-20 lead they would not surrender. To that point, the Lions used 5-7 shooting from three-point land to power the offense.
Fredonia State cut the lead to close out the half. Pitcher hit a short jumper with 40 seconds left to stop the slide. Mickley backed that up with a three to end the half trailing 32-25.
Pitcher led the Devils with 10 points at the break. Haslett matched Pitcher with 10 of her own.
The teams each scored 16 points in the third quarter as Behrend maintained a 48-41 lead.
Culeton opened the fourth with a three pointer to cut the lead to four points, 32-28. Behrend ran off the next six points and never looked back, taking a 10-point lead, 38-28, with 5:55 left to play.
Fredonia State (2-1) shot 35 percent from the floor. while the Lions (3-1) hit 33 percent of their shots. Behrend held the edge in both free throws made, 11-10, and three pointers, 6-3.
The Devils travel to Pitt-Bradford on Friday.
