UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Fredonia State women's soccer dropped its 2019 season-opener Friday to John Carroll, 3-2.
Jordan Barrett and
Sophie Richiusa scored the Fredonia State goals.Â
Goals by Syndey Scello in the 12th minute and Brittany Dufalla in the 54th minute put John Carroll on top 2-0. Dufalia's goal came off a JCU corner kick.
Barrett picked up the first Fredonia goal -- the freshman was playing her first college game -- early in the 60th minute with a shot from 15 yards out on a ball played into the box by
Erin Pratt. It cut the JCU lead to 2-1.
JCU regained a two-goal advantage in the 84th minute as Jaclyn Audino converted a free kick over a wall of Fredonia defenders lined up on the goal line after the Blue Devils were called for passing a ball to freshman goalkeeper
Madalyn Traverse from inside the box.
That play loomed even larger when Richiusa scored off a corner kick by
Melanie Minotti in the 86th minute. The Blue Devils kept the pressure up trying for the equalizer but were turned away.
Traverse made three saves in her first collegiate game.Â
The Blue Devils are off on Saturday before returning to action Sunday at Case Western Reserve at 1:30Â
