OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Three Oswego double plays stymied Fredonia in the second game of their SUNYAC softball doubleheader Monday. The Lakers swept the twinbill, 16-3 in the opener and 2-1 in the second game.
Sam Seegar followed a two-hit shutout last Thursday vs. Cortland with a one-hitter Monday, yet came up on the short end as Oswego scored two unearned runs. She struck out two and walked two.
The two losses dropped Fredonia to 11-19 overall and 6-8 in the SUNYAC.
The Devils in the details:
GAME ONE
- Fredonia took the early, short-lived lead with a run in the top of the first. Karli Murray was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. She advanced to second and third on wild pitches and scored on an infield groundout by Megan Maull.
- The Lakers tied the score 1-1 in the last of the second, then blew the lid off the game with nine runs in the third inning and six runs in the fourth. Katie Yudin was tagged with the loss.
- The Blue Devils added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A single by Eva FitzSimmons and a single by Nicole Kumro plated the run in the fourth. Jules Vassallo singled and scored on a single by Delana Thomas in the fifth.
- FitzSimmons had two hits
GAME TWO
- A walk, two bunts, and two errors on the same play -- a dropped fly ball and an overthrow -- led to both Oswego runs in the third inning.
- Fredonia threatened in the first after Murray doubled to lead off the game. She was erased on a double play. The Lakers also turned two in the second and sixth innings.
- The only Fredonia run came in the fifth and it, like the two Oswego runs, was unearned. Kumro singled, went to third on a passed ball, advanced to third on a single by Alyssa Piniewski, and scored on an overthrow.
- Oswego's only hit, a double by Rebecca Vilchez, came with two outs in the second inning.
WHAT'S NEXT?
- The Blue Devils travel Tuesday to Erie, Pa., for a non-conference doubleheader vs. Penn State Behrend.
