Game Recap: Softball |

Walk-off win, walk-off loss for softball

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Walk-off finishes were the order of the day Monday for the Fredonia softball team. The first was a 7-6 decision over Ursinus on a game-winning single to center by Marisa Sultana. The latter was a tough 5-4 loss to Utica. Both games were played at the Osceola County Sports Complex.

Maddy O'Heir made her first collegiate pitching appearance in the opener, a scoreless inning of relief resulting in the win. The Game 1 starter, Sam Seegar, took the loss in relief of Game 2 starter Katie Yudin, who was named SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week based off her two weekend outings at The Spring Games.

Sultana finished with two hits and three RBI while Yudin and Megan Maull had two hits each against Ursinus. O'Heir and Karli O'Heir had two hits each against Utica.

The Blue Devils are 3-5 heading into their off day Tuesday in the middle of their week-long Florida trip.

The Devils in the Details as follows:

GAME ONE
  • After Ursinus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Blue Devils scored three runs in the bottom half. Rhianna Paoletti walked, went to second on a sac bunt by Sydney Merkley, and scored when Yudin lined the first pitch she saw past the right-fielder. Maull then bounced a single between first and second to score Yudin for a 2-2 tie. Three straight walks resulted in the third run, Sultana picking up an RBI with a bases-loaded free pass.
  • Seegar gave up a lead-off triple in the top of the third, then retired the next three batters.
  • The Blue Devils tacked on their fourth run in the last of the third when Jules Vassallo walked and scored on a triple by Sultana which the Ursinus left-fielder lost in the sun.
  • Ursinus chased Seegar and took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth and scored four unearned runs off her and reliever Maria Caviris – appearing in her first collegiate game.
  • The Blue Devils cut the deficit to 6-5 in the sixth. Ursinus left-fielder Gab Manto made a diving catch of a liner off the bat of pinch-hitter Eva FitzSimmons. The end result was a double play – and a sacrifice fly – when the runner at third scored but the runner trying to advance to third was thrown out.
  • Third baseman Cassie Herman turned an unassisted double play in the top of the Ursinus sixth. With runners on second and third, she fielded a hard bouncer in front of the bag, tagged the runner heading to home, pivoted back, and tagged the runner coming to third.
  • Maull started Fredonia's winning rally with a double. Two Ursinus errors on an infield grounder allowed Maull to score. Sultana dropped a single to center to score Jules Vassallo and end the game.

GAME TWO
  • Utica took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, which ended with a sliding catch by O'Heir in short left field.
  • The Blue Devils scored three unearned runs in the third inning. Amber Piniewski and Murray had back to back singles to start the inning, and O'Heir had an RBI single to give the Blue Devils their first lead, 2-1.
  • Utica scored two unearned runs in the third and chased Yudin from the circle. FitzSimmons threw out a runner trying to steal second to end the uprising. It was one of two runners she gunned down during the game.
  • Caviris pinch hit to open the Fredonia seventh and lined a single inside the line in right to start the inning. Pinch runner Rhianna Paoletti went all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amber Piniewski and scored on a squeeze bunt by Murray.
  • A hit batsman started the Utica two-run rally in the last of the seventh. It ended on a two-run single by Nicole Rice.

WHAT'S NEXT?
  • The Blue Devils are off Tuesday before returning to action Wednesday at Legends Way against Lasell at 1:30 p.m., followed by a meeting with Lake Forest.
