Devils get out the brooms

CENTRAL FLORIDA -- The Fredonia baseball team swept a three-game set against Oneonta in Florida to open SUNYAC play on Saturday and Sunday. The Devils received solid pitching, using four pitchers to complete the three games; timely hitting, outscoring the Red Dragons 26-5; and played strong defense.

They won by scores of 11-2, 6-1, and 9-2.

Complete games from Luke Kuczewski and Sam Cestra got things rolling on Saturday. Kuczewski (2-0) needed 105 pitches to go all nine innings, scattering six hits while striking out eight and walking one.

Cestra took the ball in Game 2, which was scheduled for seven innings, giving up a lone run in the sixth. He allowed five hits, struck out five, and walked two.

In support of Kuczewski, the offense came early and often. One in the first, three in the second, and five in the third saw the Devils jump out to a 9-1 lead, chasing reigning SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Robert Ottaviano after just 2 1/3 innings.

Game 2 was close with the Devils nursing a 1-0 lead in the fifth. The offense then exploded for five runs. Pat Bigham ripped a two-run single during the rally.

Billy Clifford finished the day 6-for-10, Trevor Bradshaw was 5-for-8, and Domenic Monti went 3-for-7. Bigham had a multi-hit effort in Game 2.

The Devils out-hit Oneonta 24-11 and made two errors compared to Oneonta's nine. Fredonia won the battle of the freebies, walking three compared to Oneonta's nine.

The trends continued in Game 3 played on Sunday. Nick Lawlor took the mound for Fredonia. He would leave with a 6-0 lead after four-plus innings of work. Nick Ciraolo (2-0) swooped in to vulture the win, going five innings, striking out five and walking none. One run was was charged to each Lawlor and Ciraolo.

The Devils out-hit Oneonta, 10-8, and took advantage of three more errors and six walks -- two coming with the bases loaded.

Nic Fiore, Russ Mistretta, and Monti each had a pair of hits, with Mistretta driving in a pair and tripling. Jon Morrison added a pinch-hit, run-scoring double.

"Our men worked exceptionally hard at preparing themselves for this weekend," said head coach Matt Palisin. "We have some new faces this year, and we are starting to define who we are. We played hard and each player did his job. We went in with a sweep mentality and came away with just that."

Fredonia is now 3-0 in conference and 5-2 overall. They have three mid-week games, in addition to another SUNYAC series while in Florida. The Devils take on New Paltz next Saturday and Sunday.

Oneonta dropped to 5-4 and 0-3 in the conference.
