Devils rally for key win over Brockport

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia claimed a key 56-52 victory over Brockport in SUNYAC women's basketball Tuesday at Dods Hall.

Sophomore guard Rae White (North Collins, N.Y. / Lake Shore) led Fredonia's scoring with 12 points while senior forward Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) filled up the score sheet with 10 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and four blocked shots. It was Einink's seventh double-double of the season.

Bailey Pratt and Emily Nestler had 14 points each for Brockport.

Fredonia trailed by as many as seven points in the first half and was down 23-22 at halftime. A see-saw third quarter saw Brockport -- benefiting from three straight three-point play opportunities -- take a 36-30 lead with an 8-0 run, the last three on a basket and free throw by Nestler.

A three-point basket by Einink pulled the Blue Devils even, 38-38, and a driving lay-up by sophomore guard Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga, N.Y., / Cleveland Hill) gave Fredonia the lead for good, 40-38.

The Blue Devils pushed their advantage out to seven points, 45-38, on a lay-up by senior guard Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta), then held off a Brockport charge down the stretch.

A three-point basket by Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) came after Fredonia lead had dwindled to one point, 45-44, with 1:28 remaining.

By avenging a 62-52 loss at Brockport on Jan. 29, the Blue Devils (11-11 overall, 8-7 conference) put extra distance between themselves and the Golden Eagles (8-13 overall, 6-8 conference) for the fifth and sixth playoff spots. The top six teams make the conference tournament.

Fredonia faces two strong opponents this weekend when they travel first to Oneonta for a game Friday night, then to New Paltz to play Saturday afternoon. Both those teams have already secured playoff berths.
