Devils fall to nationally ranked Geneseo

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia fell to nationally ranked Geneseo, 85-62, in SUNYAC women's basketball Tuesday at Dods Hall.

The Blue Devils (6-5 overall, 3-1 SUNYAC) fell behind early, made a couple of runs, yet eventually fell as the unbeaten Knights (11-0 overall, 5-0 SUNYAC), ranked No. 14 by D3Hoops.com and No. 16 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, pulled away late in the game.

Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta) led Fredonia with 14 points on 7 of 12 shooting, plus a team-high five rebounds. Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) added 13 points despite playing through foul trouble. Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill) added 11 points in 10 minutes of duty. In addition, Rae White (North Collins, N.Y. / :Lake Shore) was credited with nine assists.

Lindsay Halpin led Geneseo with 23 points, including a pair of crucial threes late in the third quarter, while McKenna Brooks had 17 points and Nicole Kaczmarczyk 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Knights came out on fire, hitting 9 of 11 first-quarter shots, to take a 24-15 lead. A three-point basket by Einink and a layup by Braelin Scott (Victor, N.Y. / Bloomfield) cut Fredonia's deficit to 24-20 in the first minute of the second quarter. The Knights went on a 7-2 run and pulled out to a 44-33 advantage at the half.

Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) had three baskets during the run, including a step-back jumper to trim Geneseo's lead to 52-48 late in the third quarter. She also contributed several key defensive stops during the run. The Knights stemmed the tide with a pair of three-point shots by Halpin to close out the quarter with a 60-48 lead.

Geneseo outscored Fredonia 24-14 in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils are back in action this weekend when they taken their annual North Country trip for SUNYAC games Friday night at Plattsburgh and Saturday afternoon at Potsdam.
