PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Plattsburgh used a fourth-quarter surge to power past Fredonia, 64-57, in women's college basketball action on Friday. The Devils fall to 3-2 in the SUNYAC, and 6-6 overall. They were led by
Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y / Hannibal) with 14 points and eight rebounds, and
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) went for 10 points and five boards.
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) added nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds and four blocks.
With the Devils up 52-51 and just over six minutes remaining, the Cardinals went on a 12-1 run to take command of the game. With Fredonia down by 10 inside the final minute, back-to-back layups by
Rae White (North Collins, N.Y. / Lake Shore) and
Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill) made it a six-point game, but the Devils would not get any closer.
The game was was close throughout. The Devils led 17-16 after one quarter, before Plattsburgh led 34-32 at the half. Both teams scored 13 points in the third before Plattsburgh's run would prove to be the difference.
The Cardinals (2-4 SUNYAC / 5-8 overall) were led by Taylor Durnin with 28 points. Ly'rell Walker and Theresa Quinn added 11 apiece.
Fredonia shot 41 percent from the floor compared to Plattsburgh's 34 percent. The Cardinals outshot the Devils 6-2 from three-point land to help make up the difference.
Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush Henrietta) put together a solid game with eight points, six rebounds, and four blocks.
The Devils visit Potsdam to wrap up the North Country road trip on Saturday.
