Devils give Geneseo all they can handle

GENESEO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team gave the No. 18-ranked Geneseo Knights a run for their money, before a late-fourth quarter run doomed the Devils in a 69-59 loss on Tuesday.

Freshman Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) led Fredonia with 16 points, and Rae White (North Collins, N.Y. / Lake Shore) and Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill) had 10 apiece. Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) added 10 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

The Devils opened the game with a 7-1 lead four minutes into the first quarter. Pitcher converted a pair of baskets, and White nailed a three pointer. Geneseo responded by rattling off the next seven points to take its first lead of the game. There would be three more lead changes before the quarter ended tied at 14.

Geneseo scored the first six points of the second quarter to take its biggest lead, 20-14,  to that point. The Devils used a three pointer by Turley late in the quarter to tie the game at 26. A three by Geneseo's Lindsay Halpin closed the scoring for the half, with the Knights up, 29-26.

Fredonia kept the game close and eventually regained the lead, 37-36, when Pitcher nailed a three pointer with 4:09 left in the third.

A three by Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) inside the final minute of the third tied the game at 43. Geneseo ended the quarter with a traditional three-point play by McKenna Brooks to go up 46-43.

The Devils' last gasp came when Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush Henrietta) converted a layup with just under seven minutes left to play to make it a four-point game.

Geneseo then took control with an 8-0 run that gave them a 12-point lead, 59-47, with 3:42 remaining.

Both teams shot 39 percent from the floor, and the Devils held a 9-2 edge in three pointers.

Geneseo gained the advantage from the free-throw line, shooting 20 of 28 while the Devils were just four of 10.  The Devils were whistled 26 times, while the home team was called for 12 fouls.

The Knights also outrebounded the Devils, 45-33.
