Devils fall short

FREDONIA, N.Y. --The SUNYAC-leading Oneonta Red Dragons slipped past Fredonia, 56-46, in women's college basketball action on Saturday. The Devils were tied early in the second half, and pulled within two points twice, but could not pull off the upset.

Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill) led the Devils with 14 points, and Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) pulled down 12 rebounds and had six points. Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake)  chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.

The first quarter was slow going. At the end of one, Fredonia led 8-5, and held the Red Dragons to just two field goals. The Devils' offense came from threes by Turley and Jayla James (Buffalo, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill), and a layup by Pitcher.

The Devils would lead until a layup by Oneonta's Olivia Allrich at the 4:17 mark of the second quarter made it 15-all. A three by Alexa Amalbert gave Oneonta the lead.

Turley came right back and nailed her second three of the game to tie things at 18. After an Oneonta free throw, Turley nailed a jumper to give the Devils a 20-19 lead with 2:39 left.

Oneonta would eventually take a 24-22 lead into halftime. Pitcher had eight first-half rebounds, and Turley led all scorers with eight points.

Einink quickly tied the game to start the second half with a short jumper for Fredonia. After trading baskets, a layup and three pointer by the visitors gave Oneonta the lead for good.

Oneonta led 39-35 at the end of three quarters.

A layup by Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) brought the Devils to within two, 39-37, to start the fourth.

Pitcher hit a 15-foot jumper at the 7:33 mark to again make it a two-point game, 41-39.

Oneonta answered with back-to-back threes and took the momentum to the final buzzer.

Leanne Corso led the Dragons with 14 points and Amalbert had 11. The Dragons sit atop the SUNYAC with an 8-1 mark, and move to 14-2 overall.

Fredonia evens its SUNYAC mark at 4-4, and falls to 7-8 overall.
