FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team fell to a solid New Paltz squad, 82-60, on Friday.
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) led the Devils with 17 points.
Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill) added 11.
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) grabbed 10 boards to go along with eight points.
With the game tied at 4-all in the first quarter, New Paltz connected on six three pointers during a 20-2 run to go up 18 points. Three of them by came from Lindsay Bettke.
Fredonia then closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to close the gap to 22-13 at the first break.
The teams played evenly early in the second quarter. With the Hawks up 33-23, New Paltz pulled away on a 10-2 run to close the half and would lead 43-25.
Bettke led all scorers with 16 points. Chiacchia led the Devils with 12 points and Einink had seven rebounds at the break.
New Paltz outscored Fredonia 20-16 in the third. Paige Niemeyer led the Hawks with nine points in the frame, and Turley had seven for the Devils, shooting three of three from the floor. New Paltz led 63-41 after three quarters.
Both teams scored 19 in the fourth to give the final.
For New Paltz (7-1 SUNYAC / 11-4 overall), Bettke reached the 1,000-point plateau with a three-point basket to open the second quarter. She finished with 16, all of them coming in the first half. Rachel Simon added 14 points. Marion Deitz had eight assists.
The Hawks would shoot 11 of 31 from long range, and Fredonia hit five of 11 threes. Both teams grabbed 29 rebounds. Fredonia shot 51 percent from the floor, but were hampered by 23 turnovers, compared to just seven by New Paltz.
The Devils (4-3 / 7-7 overall) are scheduled to take on Oneonta on Saturday in Dods Hall. Gametime has been pushed up two hours to Noon in an effort to beat Winter Storm Harper.
