FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia closed twice to within one goal but its rally fell short in a 4-2 loss Saturday to Grove City on the second day of the Blue Devil Soccer Classic.
Michaela Burke had two goals and Maggie Williams and Katherine Reese one goal each for Grove City, which improved to 2-2 and outshot Fredonia 13-5.
Fredonia was credited with a team goal with a Grove City headed the ball into her own net while sophomore
Danielle Spring (Allegany, N.Y.) scored her second goal in as many days for the Blue Devils, who will take a 1-3 record into their road game Tuesday at Medaille.
Grove City was up 2-0 when the own goal cut the margin in half in the 57th minute. Burke's second goal three minutes later restored Grove City's two-goal lead, then Spring tallied in the 79th minute, assisted by sophomore
Lauren Cullinan (Lancaster, N.Y.)
Reese followed with an insurance marker one minute later.
A pair of Fredonia freshmen, defender
Emily Kwiatkowski (Lakeview, N.Y.) and midfielder
Sophie Richiusa (Penfield, N.Y.), were named to the all-tournament team. Oswego State won both its games to claim the Classic title.
