Fredonia falls 2-1 to Houghton in Classic

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Houghton College's Brice Bogna had a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over Fredonia during the Blue Devil Classic men's soccer tournament Friday at University Stadium.

Chad Gilson (Olcott, N.Y./Newfane) scored the Fredonia goal in the second minute, assisted by Conrad Rathbun (Naples, N.Y./Naples). It was Gilson's first goal of the season.

Fredonia junior goalkeeper Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind.) made nine saves. The two goals he allowed were the first this season after back-to-back shutouts.

The Blue Devils fell to 1-1-1 heading into Saturday's Classic game vs. Catholic while Houghton is 2-1-0. The Highlanders face Buffalo State in what now amounts to the tournament championship game. Both games start at 2:30 p.m.

"I thought we had a great start," Fredonia Head Coach P.J. Gondek said, "but after our goal, we lost composure for a period of time. We adjusted at halftime and showed more composure. We had the chance to tie multiple times."

Gilson's goal came on a play which began with a free kick by Fredonia beyond the midfield stripe. The ball was played into the attack zone, headed forward, and dropped back by Rathbun to Gilson, who completed the play to give Fredonia a 1-0 lead. It was his first goal as a collegian.

Houghton countered in the 14th minute when Bogna outmaneuvered a defender and slid a pass across to Gab Vanwyk, whose shot came with Bentham off his line.

The same two Highlanders combined for the winning goal. It came in the 56th minute off a corner kick by Vanwyk. Stationed in the box, Bogna settled the ball and scored from close range after the ball appeared to deflect off a Fredonia defender.

Houghton goalkeeper Caleb Loew made one save while his teammate outshot Fredonia 23-5.

"Credit Houghton," Gondek said. "They were pretty good moving the ball (and were) tough to defend."
