Strong showing in Pool Play

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in the second day of Pool Play at Cortland on Saturday and finished the weekend 2-1 in conference action. The Devils ended on a strong note, defeating Buffalo State, 3-0, in the final match of the day. Earlier, they took last year's conference champion Brockport to the limit, falling three sets to two, forcing extra points in the final set before falling 18-16.

Fredonia dropped the first set against Brockport, 23-25, before dominating play in the second, winning 25-13. The teams split the next two before the Golden Eagles prevailed.

The Fredonia offense featured four players with eight or more kills. SallyAnne Rudny (Jamestown, N.Y. / Southwestern) paced the offense with 14 kills. Emma Booth (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier), Emily Jones (Plainfield, Ill. / Joliet Catholic), and Kailey Falk (York, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) had 10, nine and eight kills respectively. Rudny and Amanda Mosack (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Schroeder) both had three service aces.

Mosack was credited with 41 assists.

Against Buffalo State, the Devils cruised to a 25-8 first-set victory and never looked back. They took the final two sets by identical 25-22 scores.

Kailey Falk accounted for 18 points with nine aces and nine kills, while topping the team with 18 digs. Booth led Fredonia with 10 kills. Mosack added 30 assists.

Fredonia improves to 2-1 in the SUNYAC and 9-5 overall. The team also picked up two points in the Battle by the Lake all-sports competition with Buffalo State. It was the first meeting in any sport between the two schools this fall. Fredonia has won the Battle in each four years of its existence.

The next chance for points is Oct. 6th, when both the men's and women's soccer teams take on the Bengals.
