ERIE, Pa. -- Fredonia won the last three sets to defeat Penn State Behrend, 3-2, in women's volleyball Tuesday.
The Blue Devils (6-2) dropped the first two sets, 20-25 and 23-25, then bounced back with 26-24, 25-22, and 15-11 wins to improve to 6-2 this season.
Down by four points midway through the second set, Fredonia righted itself with a 5-0 run, including three kills by
Brinn Shaughnessy (Apalachin, N.Y./Owego). Behrend rallied back and led 24-23 before the Blue Devils closed out the match with three straight points -- consecutive kills by
Kailey Falk (York, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and a service ace by
Makenna Kallin (Owego, N.Y./Owego).
Passes by
Amanda Mosack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) set up both of Falk's kills. Mosack had 48 assists in the five sets.
In the fourth set, the lead changed several times prior to the Blue Devils closing it out with a 6-3 run, including two kills by
Emma Falk (York, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and a service ace by Kallin. The final point was a kill by
SallyAnne Rudny (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern), from
Rachel Aiello (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).
Fredonia led the fifth and deciding set from start to finish and won the match with three straight points: a kill by
Emma Falk, an attack error by Behrend with the Falk sisters combining for a block, and a kill by Rudny.
Rudny led the attack with 17 kills and added 21 digs,
Emma Falk added 12 kills, Aiello had 26 digs and
Kailey Falk collected 25 digs, and the Falks had five blocks each.
Next up for Fredonia is a Friday match at St. John Fisher as part of the Nazareth Invitational. The Blue Devils meet Mount Union and Nazareth on Saturday.
