ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia men's soccer avenged a 2-0 loss to Nazareth last season with a win by the same score Tuesday afternoon.
Chad Gilson (Olcott, N.Y./Newfane) scored his second goal of the season and
Ibrahim Doumbia (New York, N.Y./Business of Sports School) added his first as a Blue Devil, while junior goalkeeper
Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) made three saves for his third shutout of the season.
The Blue Devils improved to 2-2-1 heading into their non-conference home game 2 p,m. Saturday vs. Grove City.
Gilson's goal in the 54th minute was assisted by
Conrad Rathbun (Naples, N.Y./Naples). The play began with a quick throw in by Rathbun into the corner, followed by Gilson dribbling along the end line. He slid his shut under Golden Flyers goalkeeper Brian Wilson. "It was a veteran move," Fredonia Head Coach
P.J. Gondek, "from two juniors."
The insurance tally by Doumbia came in the 87th minute, the end result of a solo run through the middle of the Nazareth defense by
Matt Belardi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield). Wilson made the initial save on Belardi and Doumbia tapped in the rebound. "It was a great individual effort by Belardi," Gondek said. "It was a solid comeback win after a disappointing weekend."
