BOXSCORE BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's tennis team defeated D'Youville, 7-2, on Friday in head coach
Matt Johnson's coaching debut.
Mikayla Johnson, at No. 4 singles, and
Jane Chiacchia, at No. 5 singles, each won 6-0 and 6-0.
Fredonia also got singles wins from
Olivia Miller, 6-2 and 6-0;
Sarah Bunk, 6-2 and 6-2; and
Taylor Marelli 6-0 and 6-2.
Doubles wins came from Johnson and Chiacchia, 8-0 at No. 2 doubles; and
Mallory Mecca and Marelli, 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
D'Youville earned both its points at the No. 1 spot. Lauren Karoglan defeated
Anna Chiacchia, 6-3 and 7-6. Karoglan combined with Gillian Wittig at No. 1 doubles for am 8-5 win.
"I was pleased with the team's performance today in our season opener," said Johnson. "The win was a confidence builder. I hope that the team can carry this momentum forward into tomorrow's match."
Fredonia State plays host to Pitt-Bradford at Noon on Saturday.
