FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State battled through several tightly contested matches Tuesday afternoon but came up short in a 5-2 loss to Alfred University at the Steele Hall Courts.

Emily Solazzo and Taylyn Stanton earned the Blue Devils' two team points with victories at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

Solazzo defeated Caitlin Bittel 6-4, 6-4. After claiming the opening set, Solazzo found herself trailing 3-0 in the second before rallying to win six of the final seven games and secure the straight-set victory.

Stanton added Fredonia's second point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Abby Coombs at No. 6 singles.

The Blue Devils were also competitive in several of the match's marquee contests. At No. 1 singles, Lucy Prevet split the first two sets with Alyssa Seegert before falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Allison Bartoszek pushed Alexis Gits to three sets at No. 3 singles before dropping a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision, while Rylyn Tunstall also forced a third set at No. 4 singles in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 loss to Camryn Moore.

Head coach Jane Gens praised her team's effort against a strong Alfred squad.

"Nice playing on both of their parts," she said. "The matches that went to three sets were amazingly close. We almost pulled it off. I couldn't be any prouder of them. They played really well against a solid team."
