CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia softball turned in two solid efforts against traditionally strong opponents Sunday at the Legends Way complex.
The Blue Devils led 4-0 before the University of Chicago rallied for a 7-6 win in the morning game. Nationally ranked Williams scored twice in the last of the sixth to down the Blue Devils, 2-0, in the second game of the day. The losses dropped Fredonia to 6-6 overall with four games left in their southern trip, starting with games Monday vs. Juniata at 9 a.m. and Plymouth State at 11:30 a.m. Both games are back at Legends Way.
Here is a recap of Sunday's games:
GAME ONE, University of Chicago 7, Fredonia 6 --The Blue Devils got out of the gate quickly. They took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single by
Katelyn Dennis (Webster,N.Y/Webster Schroeder) and a sacrifice fly by
Emma Isaac (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca). A lead-off single by
Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and a double by
Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) got the inning started. The Blue Devils used two-out magic to take a 4-0 lead in the second inning when
Alyssa Piniewski (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) lined a single to left ahead of a two-run homer to right-center by Yudin, her first homer of the season and third as a Blue Devil.
Eva FitzSimmons (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) made it 5-1 when she led off the fourth with a double to right-center, alertly advanced to third on a slow grounder to third, and slid under the tag at home plate to score on a wild pitch. The Blue Devils loaded the bases later in the inning, yet were unable to come up with a clutch hit. That would come back to haunt them later. Chicago rallied for a 5-5 tie, Fredonia retook the lead 6-5 on an RBI double by Dennis in the last of the sixth, then Chicago pushed two runs on a hit and four walks to take a 7-6 lead off Laura Collorone (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), who was pitching in relief of Yudin.
GAME TWO, Williams 2, Fredonia 0 -- Williams, No. 4 in the National Fastball Coaches Association, scored two runs in the last of the sixth to break up a pitchers' duel between Fredonia sophomore
Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Starpoint) and sophomore Rebecca Duncan. Seegar allowed just one runner and no hits until allowing a clean single through the middle with one out in the fifth. Duncan, a 2017 First Team NFCA All-New England Region and NESCAC Rookie of the Year, pitched out of jams in the fifth inning (runners on first and second with no outs) and the sixth inning following a one-out double to right-center by Keeler. The Ephs broke the scoreless in the last of the sixth on a single, a double, and a squeeze bunt. A throwing error plated the second run.
