Dennis breaks career homer record

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia senior Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) broke the team school record for career homers Friday in a 5-3 loss to Lakeland at Hancock Park. The Blue Devils (6-4) also lost to 5-1 to Framingham State earlier Friday.

Dennis cracked her 10th homer as a Blue Devil to give her team a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. She surpassed Heather Mercer (2001-04) and Katie Bartkowiak (2010-13), who each had nine homers in their college careers.

The two-run homer by Dennis was preceded by an RBI double by Cassie Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley Central) and a leadoff single by Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), who got the three-run inning started.

Dennis, Keeler, and Eva FitzSimmons (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) had two hits each as part of a 12-hit attack. The Blue Devils left 11 runners stranded.

Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y/Starpoint) was the losing pitcher while Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) took the loss against Framingham State in Friday's first game. Dennis accounted for Fredonia's only run in the opener  -- she had four hits in the doubleheader -- with an RBI single in the last of the first after Keeler walked and stole second.

The Blue Devils are idle Saturday before meeting a pair of NCAA Division III powers on Sunday -- University of Chicago at 9 a.m., Williams at 11:30 a.m. Both games are at Legends FIeld.
