CLERMONT, Fla. -- Shelbi Poehlein's two-run homer was one of only two hits allowed Tuesday by Fredonia sophomore righthander
Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), yet it was all that Transylvania needed in its 2-0 victory over the Blue Devils at Hancock Park.
Seegar threw only 56 pitches, walked one, and struck out two yet came up just short in the pitchers' duel. The Blue Devils fell to 5-1 while Transylvania -- which received a vote in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll -- improved to 8-2.
Fredonia managed four singles off two Transylvania pitchers. Two of them came from the first two batters of the game,
Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y.) and
Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y.). Yundin was caught stealing during Keeler's at-bat.
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y.) and
Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y.) had back-to-back singles to lead off the second, only to have Pixley erased for leaving the base early.
The Blue Devils' had only one other runner reach second base.
Rhianna Paoletti (Bay Shore, N.Y.) walked with two outs in the fifth and advanced on a wild pitch, yet was stranded.
Fredonia is idle Wednesday ahead of a pair of games Thursday at Legends Field -- 2 p.m. vs. Scranton and 4:30 vs. Becker.
