AUBURNDALE, FLA -- The SUNY Fredonia baseball team pounded out 41 hits in a doubleheader sweep to improve to 8-1 on Monday afternoon. The Devils dropped McDaniel, 9-3, in the first game, and defeated Westfield State, 21-7, in Game 2. They batted around in the fourth and seventh innings vs. McDaniel, and the fifth, seventh, and ninth innings against Westfield State.
Against McDaniel,
Jon Morrison (Macedon, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) had three doubles and
Patrick Sheehan (West Seneca, N.Y. / Orchard Park) also had three hits, including a double.
Nicolas Fiore drove in four runs on a pair of hits.
Steve Zaprowski (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville South) and
Joshua Crocetti (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) each had a pair of base knocks. The Devils had 15 hits, including seven doubles, as a team.
Pierce Gardon (Holland, N.Y. / Holland) earned the win on the mound, going 4 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs. He was pulled due to an injury, and
Ryan Landers earned the save going 4 2/3 innings allowing no runs on one hit.
In the nine-inning contest vs. Westfield, the Devils saw Zaprowski and
J.T. Angora (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush Henrietta) set career bests with five hits apiece. Zaprowski connected for a three-run homerun and drove in five. Angora's game included a grand slam homerun as he drove in four.
Kole Brink (Frewsburg, N.Y. / Frewsburg) had four hits and scored three times, while
Matt Kellner (Hamburg,N.Y. / Frontier) had three hits and drove in three runs.
Derek Fie (Corning, N.Y. / Corning East),
Nick Ciraolo (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence), and
D.J. Schiersing (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca East) turned in two-hit games.
Ciraolo, who started the game in centerfield, came in and tossed four innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed one run on five hits, and struck out one.
Tyler McLoughlin (Hendersonville, Tenn. / Westmoreland) started the game and went four innings allowing six runs.
Luke Kuczewski (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) worked a scoreless ninth.
The Devils take on Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday.
